Neuberger Berman Hires Eric Karlson As Private Placement Debt Team Expands
New York, NY, September 27, 2022 – Neuberger Berman, a private, independent, employee-owned investment manager, today announced the hire of Eric Karlson, who joins the firm as Managing Director and Portfolio Manager in the private placement debt team focusing on asset-backed securities (“ABS”) and structured transactions.
Neuberger Berman is committed to bringing access to the broad private placement marketplace by focusing on corporate credit, structured asset-backed securities, credit tenant leases, project finance and infrastructure opportunities from a global issuer universe. The firm provides a broad range of public fixed income asset classes and private fixed income capabilities including private debt, consumer and small business lending, private residential mortgages and European private loans.
In this new role, Karlson will further expand and complement access to the private ABS market for the firm’s insurance company and other clients. He joins Neuberger Berman from AIG, where he served as Managing Director and led private ABS and structured transactions. He managed a structured finance portfolio for the firm’s insurance companies, as well as third-party managed pension and reinsurance accounts. He also brings executive management experience, serving as President and Managing Director of Textron Financial Corporation’s capital markets group. Karlson holds a B.B.A in international finance from The George Washington University, and an M.B.A. from The Leonard N. Stern School of Business at New York University.
“Private placement debt is an essential part of a broad fixed income offering and it has been a priority to expand our capabilities. The dedicated Neuberger Berman team, which began in 2021, is off to an exceptional start and has been well-received by insurance and non-insurance clients alike. Attracting a talent like Eric is an excellent addition and helps us to provide unique access across the market including corporate, project/infrastructure, CTL and private ABS,” said Jason Pratt, Senior Portfolio Manager and Head of Insurance Fixed Income. “We feel that we have the complete package of resources to meet demand and the experience, access, and expertise unique in this marketplace.”
Neuberger Berman’s private placement debt team is differentiated from peers, in part because it is not affiliated with any single insurance balance sheet, allowing for broader access and opportunities. Neuberger Berman manages $418 billion in total AUM which includes $186 billion in public and private fixed income. Insurance company clients account for $62 billion of the total AUM. The fixed income team comprises 190+ professionals located in eight global locations. The firm also has 25 professionals dedicated to insurance clients.
